PostSubject: "Junkyard Turbo" fun   Mon Jan 17, 2011 1:05 am

Had a great time yesterday! What a fun group of people to hang out with.
Some turbo questions came up, so I thought I would share some sources.
I got almost of my information and ideas from these two sites. These guys know what they're talking about.
There are a lot of ways to go about it. Bottom line,"Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go".
Personally 0 to 60 in 5 seconds in a glass buggy is plenty fast for me! I built my system for under $200. If you are creative and can do your own basic fab and welding, it is a fun project!
Don't be afraid to stuff a turbo on an otherwise stock 1600 motor. I've found that as long as you keep the boost under ten pounds and don't rev over 5000 rpm, the motor will last for a long time. (We've put 20,000 miles on the buggy over the last 6 years and it still runs as strong as it did when it was fresh.) My daughters "Trug" has the same system plus an intercooler. She drives it to school every day.

My motor is a 1641 (slip in 88's) with an Engle V110 cam and single port heads. I run a Weber 32/36 progressive carb and a T-25 IHI turbo off a late 1980's Subaru XT Coupe. 7 lbs of boost. Nuth'in fancy, but it works well!

So, if you're interested in turbos, don't be afraid to try it, it's not rocket science! Eric

I am a major fan of turbo's. My advise read read read. We are still fighting some demons but it is drivable, all part of the learning curve. We are running 15 lbs of boost not to much margin of error. Eric is running carbs and I am injected. Each has an advantage.

Get the book MAXIMUM BOOST from Corky Bell it will explain the basics than hit the forums.

I thought it was a Sunday ride, we were going to bring both aircooled for the ride.

We are collecting parts for a Honda turbo project. Betcha cannot own just one.

No, can't have just one. Once you play with turbos, you 're hooked! Fuel injection is the ultimate, but if you've got a carb, it can still be
a very pleasing experience.
