PostSubject: Drop Spindles   Tue Feb 04, 2014 4:15 pm

Hello.Everybody..I posted on here a few months ago about 2 1/2" drop spindles. I purchased new tie rod ends to complete the install..everything seemed to go well until I put the wheels back on. The rims were hitting the bottom ball joints. I was told to machine out another 3/16 depth on the drop spindle which I did..Just barley was hitting the rim so I went another 3/16 with same issue..Has anyone had this issue? Anyone figured out a fix?..Thanks

Seems to be a common problem:

I have 2 1/2 drop spindles on my 66...ball joints. Went with a 68 tie rod ends. I also am running 145s with smoothies. No issues. Rear stock height.

you should have nothing hitting the rim....are the tie rod ends seated proper? are the upside down? We used spindles from Vintage Warehouse and tie rod ends from Bugformance....and we had to go with 68 bearings too

I have gone through the link posted above and from I am reading you could have the spindles on the wrong side, something wrong with the ball joints or the tie rod ends. if everything is assembled correct and no issue with all parts involved you should not have any rubbing. you should not need to grind or add spacers

I wanted to thank everybody for there input on this issue. What we ended up doing is drilling through the spindle where it meets the lower ball joint a little over 5/8" all the way through and then 11/16" about half way through..that allowed the the lower ball joint to ride high enough to clear the rim. I run 5 spoke empi's and will need to get the tires balanced and have stick on wheel weights used as opposed to rim edge weights due to not clearing the ball joint when in a hard turn. Wheel spacers is an option instead of balancing your tires.. I have seen them listed on the samba for 45$ a pair. This issue has really been a headache so I hope this info helps somebody..The car looks great and drives even better..
