PostSubject: Engine Compartment Rubber   Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:34 pm

So I will have this forum filled up in no time it seems with questions. I am such the noob.

Anyway, I cleaned, primered and painted my engine compartment last night and I am hoping to install the new rubber tonight.

I noticed the the rubber seal that goes up and around the bell housing has a bit of an angle to it. Now I would assume that it should angle towared the engine and the real of the car. But I am not sure how far the tin sits back so I could see it angled toward the front of the car as well.

I just wanted to make sure. From what I have read, replacing this piece is a bit of a chore, so I want to make sure it is correct the first time.

Just looked at mine. You're right. The lip goes toward the engine and curls up.

Thank you,

I am kind of a dork. I got to looking at it and I must of forgot what I was doing when I posted my question. It has to point towards the engine becasue that's the way the 'track' faces, but the questoin is whether it angles up or down.

So thank you for clearing that up. Embarassed

PostSubject: Rear Deck Lid Weather Stip (rubber)   Tue Aug 31, 2010 11:43 pm

So I am also replacing the rubber around the deck lid on my Ghia and on each side where the strip has a vertical bend there is a hole in the channel on each side in the middle of the bend. I am assuming this is for some type of fastener to keep the rubber weather strip in the channel. What is the appropriate fastener to use here? Is it a screw, some sort of special fastener, pop rivet? Any light shed on this subject would be appreciated. Digging through the Bently and I am not finding anything.

Not sure if this is only applicable to a Ghia but I thought I would ask. The strip was missing when I purchased the vehicle so I do not know what was there previously.

My '74 Ghia has little studs spot welded in those same locations, probably used a star-nut. If yours has holes, I think a stainless steel sheetmetal screw would work real nice.

The rubber shouldn't move if the channel is snug. I'd avoid screwing into the sheet metal if you can. Screw holes are places for rust to start.

Dudes...

Look at your dates. That post is almost two years old. WAY before I started hanging with the big boys.

I know what's doing.
