PostSubject: clicking clunking under load   Wed Feb 13, 2013 7:56 pm

I got a 68 bug with freeway flyer geared swing axle. i took a trip to concord a couple weeks ago and on the way back both rear tires wore to the cords and it started to develop a rather loud clunking noise under load, more noticeable on the passenger side. this all happened at the same time. i jacked it up pulled the wheels and glanced around, everything seem tight and in order. i live in an apartment complex so working on cars is frowned upon. just looking for some help and advise as to what to check next. if any more info is needed im happy to provide it. thanks in advance.

Was the rear drum loose? I would jack it up and feel the tire from a 12 and 6 position. Did you notice any tranny fluid leaking? Kyle

both drums are tight, i tried the 3-6-9-12 push pull and wiggle, rotated and repeated, nothing was jarring around, seemed good but then again im no professional. it does seep a little out the trans, i checked the fluid and its clean and full.

What about the front tranny mount? Do you hear a knocking sound in the tunnel area in the rear? Or maybe one of your shocks froze or broke?

well the shocks feel good. as do the mounts. Its hard for me while im driving the car to decide where the clunking is actually coming from, the engine drowns a lot of the sounds out. ill have to crawl back under it tomorrow and recheck the mounts again. people here have told me the sound is more noticeable when i drive by with the passenger side towards them. does it in both forward and reverse gears

I wonder if it's something where the axle and fulcrum plates meet

Anything like this ?

Well I just got back home grabbed a beer and came right back to the car. Its in the air right now and all the trans mounts are good, they were replaced a couple years ago and still look brand new

If you have the wheel up and move it like the video can you hear the clunk inside the tranny?
