Digging through the docs that Mom sent with the car.

88mm pistons w/ a stock crank implies a 1679cc - thick-wall cylinders + the help of dual 40mm Delorto carbs. '67 Ghia disc brakes (front)

So, on the 3-cylinder deal - checked the points and all looks well after I adjusted them out (like the valves, the gap was small)

Fired it up and still not getting all 4 to fire. Sad

Off to the mechanic! Wish me luck.

Good luck!

Dellortos are cool. Check your idle jets.

I have had Dells and every once in a while I would get a plugged idle jet.

Just throwing out possibilities...

Mateo,

Pardon my ignorance (I should just add that to an auto-salutation line), but if it's the idle jets, wouldn't it fire when I rev it? I see gas pouring through both barrels of the carb on that side.

Yup, when revved up, that cylinder should fire if it was just a plugged idle jet..

Just throwing out thoughts...

Compression check would be a good idea... I can be down with that.

Back from the shop!!!!

Coupla things found out

- #1 cylinder had cross-threaded spark plug (my bad) but not all the way in so chasing the threads fixed that - mechanic had to pull the carb to get at it

- clogged idle jet - mechanic pulled a small piece of thread out of the jet

SO, now all I need to do is adjust the timing and I'm good to go! Backfires sound great but . . .

Speaking of sound, any tips on quiet exhaust systems that won't steal horsepower? I leave for work pretty early on some days - wouldn't be a prob if I didn't like the neighbors . . .

Thanks to everyone with their tips!

Oh I called that! Go back and read, it is documented.

Oh there will be no living with me now.

I called it, idle jet, yup, I did, I most certainly did... cheers

Glad you got it all worked out!!!!

Yeah, I KNEW I'd be hearing from you, Mateo.

So, can you adjust my timing from where you are? No? Well, not all THAT after all, are ya? Smile

Thanks - I'm pretty stoked.

I get crap in my idle jets all the time.

It goes with not running any air cleaners and a propped deck lid...

It is a big crap scoop right into the carbs...

Next challenge, Mateo!

Yeah, it runs, on all 4 cylinders, mind you Smile but dies after about 5 minutes of driving. I had a '65 that would do the same thing and it turned out the fuel line was clogged with OLD gasoline due to not running for months and months. Well, this car has had a similar history of not running for month and months at a time, then only short distances (<20 miles) at a shot when it was driven.

So, just left it down the street where it died - I had run it this morning to adjust the timing, then drove it once around the block, it died. Let it sit since this morning then ran it around the block just now, it died. Fuel filters (one in and one out of the fuel pump) are full of gas. Any other thoughts other than it starving for gas?

Thanks.

OK, 20 minutes later - just ran it after it sat for about 10 minutes and it ran and ran with no problem.

I'm sure that points to one singular issue, right? Something right under my nose so close that I just can't see it (due, in part, to the size of my nose, no doubt).

Anyway, I'm coming to the realization that bug ownership is just as challenging after a 25-year hiatus.

Are you running points or an electronic ignition module?

I thought you mentioned you were running points, but it looks like there are two wires from the distro to the coil in one of your pictures. One positive, one negative, which would mean you have an electronic ignition.

When the motor cuts out, does it cut out clean, all at once or does it stumble a bit then die?

Kind of sounds like ignition to me...

Mateo,

Running points (I know cuz I did an adjustment a couple weeks ago).

It stumbles and jerks before it slowly dies. It isn't a clean cut.

Hmm... stumbles sounds like fuel. Since there is visible fuel in the line maybe a sticking float in one or both of the carbs.

If it stops again, tap the side of the carbs with a screwdriver and see if it starts after that. Just a thought...

Fuel lines past the filter on either side of the "T" fitting or the "T" fitting itself?

Get some nice cloth fuel line and start eliminating old from your fuel system...

Was planning new fuel lines (and moving the filters, if I keep both cuz two seems redundant) in the near future anyway.

"Fuel lines past the filter . . . " Not sure I understand the question.

The fuel lines, in and out of the pump, run behind the fan housing so I can't see squat back there.

I'll go test the 'stall, tap, restart' suggestion right now. Hey, it couldn't be this insane heat, could it? Cuz it sure make ME want to sputter and stop!

I'm REALLY gonna show my ignorance now - brace yourselves . . .

I'm using a strobe timing light - so when I'm adjusting the setting, and the strobe flashes, the numbers on the crankshaft pulley are going UP from left to right or DOWN from left to right?

It occurred to me in the shower (I do my best thinking there) that BTDC might be on the other side of the 0 mark on the pulley. If that's the case, then this engine is RO-BUST! If not, then I got other problems (besides what I consider logical).

So with the strobe on and somewhere between 28 to 32 flashing at the top of the case at the split, the zero on the pulley should be to the left or around the 11 o-clock position if you compared it to a clock.

Which if you think about it, you are normally timing at a mark BTDC (before top dead center) so 32 BTDC would be 32 degrees before the zero or TDC hits the mark...

Hope that makes sense... and I hope I am right... LOL!!!

Mat:

You are absolutely correct. 30-32 BTDC is a good setting for a street motor. I run 34 on the autocross motor with the Engle FK-47. Ray may be running 35 on Tony's drag motor.

Well, it barely runs at 30 BTDC, better at ~25-26, but still sounds like it's running out of fuel after a couple minutes.

HOWEVER, I was just informed that my dad, knowing the car was going to be stored, put some additive into the tank. He didn't measure how much, according to the directions, just dumped a bottle in. Is this a problem?
