So I get to do my second head job this year!

A few days ago, a tow truck dropped off a friend's Cressida. He had just purchased it with around 130k miles, took it on a road trip a few days later, and proceded to blow out the head gasket while cruising down the freeway.

I'll spare you the details of the failure; they're inconsequential. All that matters is that the gasket blew before, the owner's tried to fix it with that sh-t you dump in your coolant, and it may have held a bit until the extended freeway drive.

Anyways, I started digging into the car yesterday. I'm scared that the damage is not going to be limited to the gasket. See for yourself...

Looks like they sold the car knowing it was blown the ____ up. That pisses me off.

Plastic melting at the top of the VCs.


More melting down in the valley.


Melted spark plug leads.



Also tested compression:

1 - 160
2 - 84
3 - 60
4 - 19
5 - 63
6 - 90

Take the head to Ray's for the surface.

He does Toyota's daily, has the best tooling around, and will be the best price...

Head off the Cressida. Not looking too bad. I found out where the coolant went; there's a burst hosecoming out of the thermostat housing to the head.



Probably pumped it all out fast. This is also where I saw combustion gasses escaping out of. The big question now, did the blown head gasket cause the hose to rupture, or did the ruptured hose cause the blown head gasket?

Found a slurry of oil/coolant mixture in the intake runners when I took the manifold off, so not sure yet how the coolant got into the intake system.







Also not sure yet if the engine is salvageable. So far, it doesn't look too bad. There's some marks on the cylinders, but not deep enough to catch my finger nail. Also don't know if the head is warped or not.
