PostSubject: Our new '66 bus Norman   Mon May 07, 2012 12:26 am

Time to let the cat out of the bag. I've been working on getting a split-window bus project for quite a while now. After several leads and dead-ends I have found the direction I'm going to go in. I'm now going to fill you in on the "what's up" of my story.

I ran across a super solid '66 13-window deluxe last time I went to visit my folks in Eastern Oregon. It is the dryest, most rust-free bus I've seen in my bus hunting escapades. The only problem is that it's been punched in both sides on the rear of it. The story goes that the guy's wife was driving it in the late 80's and someone ran a stop sign and clipped the bus in the passenger's side rear right behind the rear wheelwell. It spun the bus around and it smashed into a parked car on the driver's side. It was originally a Sea Blue/Cumulus White bus but has been painted Brown at some point. It's also a bulkhead bus (more on that in a sec).

So arrangements have been made and this one is going to be mine soon.

Next chapter.

This one was honestly purchased as a donor bus for the one above. It's a pretty solid walk-thru bus but a tree fell on it's roof and it's nose is a wreck. However, it has a pretty nice ass and it has a rust-free walk-thru section. My original plan was to graft these sections onto the 13-window and then I'd have the bus I want, a 13-window walk-thru deluxe. Small problem. I told my wife that I was buying these two buses and I also told her my plans. She had no problem with this (after a little coaxing) until.....This one was delivered to me today and not two seconds after it pulled up, while still on the trailer, my wife said "No way. This one can't get cut up". Two more seconds later and apparently this bus became "her's". Whaddya say?? Embarassed

So without further adieu.....meet Norman, my wife's '66 walk-thru Kombi. (By the way, I'm still looking for a donor bus if you know of one..... Laughing )

A couple more....

No wonder so many of these doubled as a storage shed! I had to put all of my VW sh-t in it to make room in the garage for him.

Someone to keep Oscar company.

So if my count is correct, you now own 4 classic VW projects? I wonder if there is a 12 step program for what we have?

The blue one looks to be nicer anyway. Would a Baywindow be an acceptable donor?

Since 2008 I have owned a total of 10 VWs. The most I had at one time was 7. Now I have 3. Maybe less soon.

Whatever!!! Nice bus!!

Yah, I agree with Breck! What ever! LOL I thought I would never go Bay, till we found one that was to good of a deal to pass up. I drive my Bay more then any other car, VW or any other. My 64 sits quietly waiting to take the horses to the arena. LOL

Anyway, you are starting to sound like me on projects! LOL I have 3 VW's and 7 Pintos to work on. LOL The Bay, Wes, has become my main focus though. LOL I love that bus.

Tell your wife congrats and tell her to tell you 'get off your butt and work on her bus!!' She will love driving it. There is nothing like driving a VW Bus!! Awesome!!!! Very Happy

Oh, I couldn't really see the nose of the bus to well. How bad is the front? The football trick does wonders to the nose of a bus! Very Happy

It's not that it's punched in or anything. It's just that it's like the roof, there has been an accident at one time and someone "repaired" it with plaster 'o bondo. And of course there's that great looking spare tire mount. The nose will have to be replaced.

But then I'd have to remove the duct tape and let her out of the basement and that sounds like a lot of work right now.
