PostSubject: A little "Identify that VW Bug" 101.   Fri Mar 16, 2012 4:45 pm

I was reading on here about some door panels that were too tall for a '65 (windows all grew in 1965 requiring shorter panels inside) and thought I'd post some basic level identify-by-year information. I meet "VW people" all the time who can't guess what year my car is despite it being obvious to within a 2 year-only possibility.

While not at all complete with all the minor mechanical updates, it's a fairly accurate at-a-glance guide. Keep this handy or memorize it, and you'll be able to call the year of a car within reason, and be able to set the novice straight when someone says "My brother had a '59 oval."
Keep in mind, fenders, decklids, lights, etc. can and do get changed for updating/backdating/repairs, and model year over-runs often used up old parts. For example, very early 1964s are trimmed like 1963s.

Go into this year's show season with the confidence that you know your VW Bugs!
This was fun to research. I hope you have fun with it, too.

While this list looks like a little much, you can break down eras by category. Let's break down the 1960s.
It's easy to immediately differentiate a pre-1968 to a post-1968 by the bumpers, and a pre 1965 by the window size, especially the side windows (smaller + vertical vent wing post). Before 1962, small tail lights. That's it!
You'll see that some years, if correct, are easy to nail on the exact year, such as 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1967.

1936-1953 (March) Split rear window.
Zwitter: Split window rear with the oval era dashboard and vent wing windows Late 1952-early 1953.
1953-1957 Oval rear window. 1955 blinkers replace semaphores.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
1958 to 1964 Larger back window and windshield. Exterior virtually identical except for:
Small tail lights, 1958-1961. Larger tail lights, 1962 on.
1964 larger front turn signals and license plate light. Metal sunroof replaces sliding sunroof.
1965 ALL windows grow again. Angled vent wing post.
1966 1300 script on decklid if it's correct. Many were changed from accidents.
1967 New style uncovered headlights, new shorter flat decklid.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
1968 New body, thick beam style bumpers. Tail lights enlarged again (tombstone shaped).
1970 Two slots added to decklid.
1971 Quarter moon vents added behind rear passenger window. Tail lights enlarged slightly.
1972 Four slots on engine lid.
1973 Tail lights enlarged final time. "Elephant hoof."
1974 Larger bumpers with impact absorbers.
1975 "Fuel Injection" script on decklid added.
Standard discontinued for US in1977.

The Super Beetle.
The Super Beetle is defined by the MacPhearon strut front suspension, not by the windshield, hence the "Super" designation.
A Super is easily defined by the very wide bulbous hood and unique front fenders that curve in at the apron.
1971-1972 Flat windshield.
1973 Curved windshield introduced for 1973 model year.
1974 Larger bumpers with impact absorbers.
1975 Last Super Sedan.
However, all further convertible production at Karmann to 1979 would be based on the Super Beetle.

We'll just call him 'Zorak' from here on out. That was the evil preying mantis from Space Ghost for all you UN-sophisticated types.
