Rear Bumper Mounting.

So this car is a 74, and the bumpers I have use the 68-73 mounting points.

So I made adapter plates.

And got the bumper bolted on. The fenders need to be cut for clearance still.

Exhaust.

I wanted an exhaust that would be loud, but also not too low that it might get ripped off on anything.

Now with the bumpers with skid plates, that really cuts down on room. I have a merged header on it, which means cutting the apron.

Here's the exhaust pipe I made. Pretty basic.

Installed top view.

Installed rear view. Note it exits between the tubes of the bumper.

Here it is with the fenders back on, cleaned up a bit, and after a short road test.

I had removed the lights so they wouldn't get any damage when I was welding.

Here I have the headlights back on, and I installed my other 2 off-road lights on the roof.

Taillights on.

At this point I need to:

-Replace the tie rod and align the front end.

-Have my front tires mounted and put them on.

-Wire up all the lights.

-Do a little painting.

-Get registration and insurance.

And possibly a couple other little things.

Then I will be ready to take it for a test run. I'm hoping for the weekend of the 25th.

Well, I probably could have had it out this weekend, but I wasn't quite ready. Mainly the reg and ins.

Update from the last couple weekends.

Last Saturday (Aug 18)I spent the morning up in the hills, and had to deal with some family issues later on, so I didn't have any time to work on the car, but I did replace the tie rod and steering dampner, and paint the front bumper. I also was able to wire in my headlights and off-road lights.

Tie rod, old and new.

Then that Sunday I spent all day replacing the transmission in my truck, so nothing got done on the Bug.

Friday Night August 24th was a productive night. The plan was to get all the fabrication work done on the car, strut brace, mounts for front shocks, rear bumper to framehorn mounts, and that was about it.

I started with the strust brace.

Materials:

Where its going. Also note the new tie rod and steering dampner.

Horseshoe shaped flat steel to mount to the strut mounting points.

The whole thing done. The cross bars connect the struts at the top, and the diagonals are welded to a plate which is bolted to the bulkhead. It's very solid, stiffens the front end, and, with some difficulty, fully removeable.

With some paint.

On a side note, when I was cutting out the metal for the strut mounting points, the cutoff wheel I was using hooked the metal, kicked back, and gave me a pretty good cut on my hand. I simply taped it up and continued working. But it did slow me down.

Front shocks:

I wanted to put front shocks on this car for some extra suspension for offroading.

Needed to make some shock mounts.

I cut out some brakets out of 1/4inch steel. Drilled some holes for shock bolts, and welded 2 to the strut tower, and 2 to the control arm on each side. Installed some Edelbrock shocks which were donated to the project. Came out very nice. And feels much better up front.

Saturday I was gone all day, today I did a little work, tying up some loose ends. Installed a battery hold down was probably the most productive. I did have a little fun with it today though.

Only could get it up on 2 tires before the left rear started spinning.

Made it to Bug-O-Rama 70. I worked on the car Saturday morning to get it there. I replaced the brake line, installed the left shock, and did a few other odds and ends. Still not done, but close.

At Bug-O I raced it, it went straight, no funny shakes, noises, vibrations, or other problems, so even though it was slow and I lost first round, I had a great time, and the car held up well. I consider it a very successful weekend.

Also got to talk to some of the forum members.
