 TYPE 3 ENGINE ISSUES

SO.........I DEVELOPED AN OIL LEAK (lol! A VW WITH AN OIL LEAK) OVER THE LAST WEEK OR SO THAT GOT SO BAD IT WAS A QUART A WEEK affraid

I NARROWED IT DOWN TO VALVE COVER GASKETS, OIL COOLER SEALS AND OIL BREATHER GASKETS. SO LOOKING AT IT.........SHOULD BE JUST A QUICK REMOVAL OF THE INTAKE, ENGINE TINS THEN COOLER. 4 NUTS AND OIL BREATHER COMES OFF. AND OF COARSE A COUPLE BAILES AND VALVE COVERS OFF.

SO TUESDAY MORNING ON THE WAY TO WORK I DEVELOP A WIERD NOISE....ALMOST LIKE A BEARING KNOCK OR SOMETHING affraid HOLY CRAP Exclamation Exclamation BUT scratch IT DOESNT SEEM TO BE AFFECTING THE ENGINE RUNNING CONDITION, PERFORMANCE OR NOTHING!!!! MAYBE THE BELT FRAYING AND SLAPPING THE FAN SHROUD?????? WELL MORE IN A MINUTE Smile

SO BACK TO THE OIL LEAK. TO GET THE TINS OFF THE GENERATOR HAS TO COME OFF. DOING THAT I FIND THE FAN HOUSING LOOSE. CRAP GOTTA DIG A LITTLE DEEPER NOW. ALSO TO GET THE OIL BREATHER OFF I HAVE TO AT LEAST OPEN THE FAN HOUSING!!!!

SO HERE I AM BETWEEN SMOGS WITH THE INTAKE WITH CARB OFF, THE GENERATOR, TINS, AND OIL COOLER OFF. THAT ONLY TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO GET DONE!


SO NEXT IS TO TACKLE THE OIL BREATHER! WELL HERE IT IS ABOUT 5:30 LAST NIGHT WITH THE EXHAUST, HEATER TUBING, FAN SHROUD AND HOUSING, FUEL PUMP (ALSO LEAKING), AND OIL BREATHER OFF! WOW THAT WAS A PAIN IN THE BUTT GETTING ALL THAT OFF!!!!


SO THIS MORING I PRESSURE WASHED THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE ENGINE SO IM NOT COMPLETELY COVERED IN OIL WHILE WORKING ON IT.

I DETERMINED YESTURDAY THAT THE NOISE COMING FROM THE ONE TWO SIDE OF THE ENGINE. SO I PULL THE VALVE COVER AND HERES WHAT I FIND!!!! affraid THERE SUPPOSED TO BE A LONGER CLIP THERE AND A WAVY WASHER BETWEEN THE TWO THAT ARE THERE. IM CURRENTLY DRAINING OIL AND HOPEFULLY WILL FIND THE REMAINING PART IN THE PAN AND GET THEM OUT. I BELIEVE THE NOISE I WAS HEARING WAS THE WASHERS HITTING THE ROCKERS AS THEY MOVED AS WELL AS THE #2 EXHAUST ROCKER MOVING ON AND OFF THE VALVE. GOOD THING I HAVE A FEW OTHER ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLIES HERE AT THE SHOP.

YIKES! That was a close call! While you have it apart, you should check the end play on the crank with a dial indicator. Just to know if it is an issue.........

ITS BACK TOGETHER AND RUNNING AGAIN. RAN INTO A COUPLE SNAGS AND WILL POST MORE ABOUT THE ADVENTURE TOMORROW.

OK SO A LITTLE BACK TRACK. HERES A SHOT OF THE MATING SIDE OF THE ROCKER THAT THE CLIP BROKE ON. THIS DAMAGE WAS DONE BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE CANYON (AT THE STOP SIGN ON THE BRIDGE IS WHEN IT STARTED MAKING NOISE AT LEAST) ON 49 TO THE SHOP HERE IN ALTA SIERRA.


HERES WHAT IT DID TO THE VALVE ITSELF affraid RAY....YOUR OPINION??? ITS STILL IN THE CAR AND SEEMS TO RUN JUST FINE AGAIN BUT SHOULD I CHANGE IT OUT?


SO NOW BACK TO THE ADVENTURE Laughing
I HAVE THESE AFTER MARKET ROCKERS THAT HAVE NO BADGING, LABELS OR ANYTHING BUT I THOUGHT THEY MAY BE RATIO ROCKERS SO I MEASURE THEM ALL OUT. OVER ALL LENGTH, CENTER SHAFT TO ENDS, SO ON AND SO FORTH AND THEY ALL MEASURE OUT THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL. HERES THE DRIVERS SIDE ORIGINAL ROCKER I PULLED OFF TO INSTALL THE OTHER AFTER MARKET ONES.


HERE IS THE ORIGINAL SITTING NEXT TO THE AFTER MARKET ONES.




SO AFTER DOING ALL MY MEASURING ETC. I INSTALLED THEM IN THE CAR. I BACKED THE ADJUSTERS ALL THE WAY OUT SO THERE WAS NO ISSUE INSTALLING THEM.

GOT THEM ALL TORQUED DOWN AND WENT AND TURNED THE ENGINE OVER TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO BINDING OR ANYTHING.

AFTER THAT I GO BACK TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND LOOK....................

WELL HERES A PICK AFTER I PULLED THE AFTERMARKET ROCKERS BACK OFF Sad APPARENTLY THEY ARE RATIO ROCKERS AND IM GUESSING THE 1:1.4 ONES Embarassed AFTER SETTING THEM SIDE BY SIDE ON THE GROUND I NOTICED THAT EVEN THO EVERYTHING MEASURED OUT THE SAME BETWEEN THE AFTERMARKET AND ORIGINAL ONE I SAW THAT THE ORIGINAL SIT A BIT HIGHER ON THE ONE SIDE OFF THE GROUND. THE ONE MEASUREMENT I DIDNT CHECK.


SO OFF COME THE HEADS TO REPLACE PUSHRODS AND PUSHROD TUBES. THIS ALSO GAVE ME CHANCE TO MEASURE THE BORE OF THE CYLINDERS AND YUP JUST A PLAIN OLD 1600 Smile



IT WAS A GOOD THING THAT I HAD REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR EVERYTHING. I DID GO AND GET SOME NEW TUBES AND SEALS THO. ONLY BECAUSE I WAS 4 SEALS SHORT AND 3 OF THE TUBES I HAVE ARE A LITTLE DINGED UP. NOT BAD BUT THE NEW ONES ARE PRETTIER lol!

SO SHE IS NOW ALL BACK TOGETHER AS OF LAST NIGHT AND RUNNING AGAIN. THIS MORING I RAN IT FOR A BIT TO CLEAN THE SYSTEM OUT WITH SOME SEAFOAM AND CHEAP OIL I HAD LAYING AROUND THE SHOP HERE SEEING THAT I PRESSURE WASHED THE ENGINE IN THE CAR WITHOUT COVERING HOLES ( I KNOW I KNOW No ) THEN I DRAINED IT AND ADDED THE VR1 20/50 THAT RAY RECOMMENDS BUTTONED ALL THE LOOSE SCREWS, TINS, HEATER HOSES, ETC UP AND NOW SHES READY TO GO AND GET SOME GAS IN HER SO I CAN DRIVE HER HOME TONIGHT. BEFORE I LEAVE TONIGHT I WILL PROBABLY DOUBLE CHECK THE VALVES JUST TO SEE MAINLY THE EXHAUST VALVE ON #2.
